Converging barges and ovals in NEB (fwd)(2003/02/10)

British Astronomical Association,John H. Rogers Report

Converging barges and ovals in NEB (fwd)
Hans-Joerg Mettig's latest JUPOS chart of the N. Tropical Current shows
rapid convergence of barges B6 and B1 and white spot Z. White spot Z has
a history of destroying spots that it encounters in its exceptionally
rapid prograding drift, and it is now virtually in contact with the f. end
of the long-lived and long barge B1. Meanwhile the northerly sector of
NEBn between B6 and B1 (a remnant of the NEB expansion in 2000) has faded,
exposing a small anticyclonic ring, which may be WS4 from the previous
apparition, which had drifted close to B6 but is now moving back towards
B1. Longitudes on Feb.10 were:
B6, L2 = 240, L3 = 64; B1, L2 = 258, L3 = 82; WSZ, L2 = 269, L3 = 93.

The attached set of hi-res images shows these spots, as well as:
--NTB fading away, then dark remnants of NTB, rapidly prograding with the
N. Temperate Current B, viz. a small dark spot (green arrow) and 2 dark
streaks f. it;
--Oval BA in the S. hemisphere
--A bright oval in S3TC.

Further images of this region would obviously be valuable to see how WSZ
impinges on the barges.

Here is a further compilation of images of the GRS and SEB following it.
It shows that one further white spot appeared in mid-SEB on Jan.28 at L2 =151.
Beautiful details of that turbulent mid-SEB region and of the S.S.Temp. white ovals passing the GRS.

Best wishes,

John H. Rogers, Ph.D.
