Summary and Cylindrical map on August, 2002

Yuichi Iga

Japanese

It began to observe the planet Jupiter in this apparition from August 6, 2002(UT). It was my drawing that was 18 days after the conjunctions of the solar because the conjunction occurred on July 20. I could get CCD images by PICONA digital still camera on August 7 in spite of the low altitude (11 degrees). Observers has been increased in each place; Kuniaki Horikawa (Yokohama) on August 8, Hideo Einaga (Hyogo pref.) and Makoto Adachi (Shiga pref.) on Aug 16, Akira Kazemoto (Kyoto) on Aug 22, Seiichi Yoneyama (Yokohama) on Aug 28 and Isamu Hirabayashi (Tokyo) on Aug 31. Table 1 shows the list of the observations in August.

Table 1: List of Observations on August, 2002

Figure 1 shows the CCD images and drawings which were reported from seven observers in August. It became to get the high quality images after August 21 when the altitude exceeded 20 degrees in the sunrise. I could make two cylindrical maps by the benefit of the Pacific high pressure although Typhoon caused bad conditions in latter August(Figure 2). I try to discover some changes of the feature in early apparition.

It is seemed that the global change didn't happen in August. I try to list each feature in the following.

SSTB SSTB seems that no change occurred, and the dark region of SSTB was II=140-190 and II=280-40.
STB The dark region of STB was located at II=140-190 after the GRS. As the same feature of last apparition, this region shifted to the stairs-shaped in the south, and seemed to form STBs(south component) (See Horikawa's drawing on Aug 28). Another dark spot was located at about II=15, therefore you may find the STB oval 'BA' by making a target of this spot (See Hirabayashi's drawing on Aug 31). I expect that the 'BA' is located at about II=0 just before this spot though 'BA' has not been detected until now.
GRS,STrZ The GRS was located at II=83.5 that was moved a little backward though it seemed on the right end of Iga's image in Aug 7. Einaga's image on Aug 24 shows that the dark material was turned around the GRS. This seems the same feature just before that the dark streak of STrZ was occurred in preceding end of the GRS in 1998, 2000 and 2001.
SEB SEB never became faint, and a big change didn't seem to have happened since last apparition. It seems that it is divided into the north and south component(SEBs and SEBn), and SEBs is thick in II= 280-70, and SEBn is thick except for it. There are no bright spots just after the GRS.
EZs Kazemoto's image on Aug 22 shows the EZs white spot(I=329.4) in the form that SEBn becomes dented a little.
NEB NEB is now the receding stage though NEB was broad in last apparition. NEB is narrow except the region II=40-130. The rifted regions exist at II=50-130 and II=250-280. The barges located at NEBn decrease with two from six of last apparition. The notches located at NTrZ decrease with three from five, too.
NTB NTB is the single dark belt at whole longitude. The north of NNTB is dark.
