Finally I caught the spot and found it astonishingly bright. Initially (05:50
UT) there was thin cloud and Saturn looked about magnitude 3 but the spot was
seen at once, and seemed to glow with almost an eerie light - I would guess to
anyone who is used to looking at the planet. Perhaps it is no brighter than the
EZ spot of 1990 but the current one has duskier surroundings. The BAA intensity
scale is: 0 = bright and 10 = black; with Ring B1 = 1 (currently nearer 2). So
as I make the NTrZ about 2.5 and the spot at least 3 points brighter we have to
go (as in 1990) to negative numbers where the spot could be -1,i.e. extending
the scale as we did back then! My old 3 inch refractor (vintage 1961) which
now rides a finder on the 415mm (and still enjoyed as a telescope in it's own
right) showed the spot easily at x120.

A low-res Saturn under bad seeing conditions. Despite this the storm was visible bright on the screen during acquisition in LRGB filters!
I measured the storm at 275°LIII - with a probable large error range that would make the mesure coherent with my drift rate calculations between 2 and 2.5°LIII/day.
