Attached is my best image of Mars so far this apparition. Due to my proximity to the Rincon Mountains, where cold air slides off over my observatory after twilight,I am usually fighting less than optimal seeing. These rapidly changing conditions and small windows of good seeing have made it virtually impossible to do RBG color imaging.
Some of you will note the smallness of my image. I get completely unsatisfactory results with any optical system combined with any barlow and I have bought and tried numerous barlows. The resultant images are worse resolution than prime focus (f/20) even with the same exposure times. I had this problem with lunar imaging and it was neatly solved with the Celestron Skyris 445M monochrome camera. The smaller pixels (3.7microns) acted just like a 1.6x barlow with respect to image resolution. The camera I'm using for color planetary work (DBK 21AU04) has 5.6 micron pixels but there are now color cameras with 3.7 micron pixels and I hope to have one in the near future, hopefully before Mars leaves our skies.
I included an inset of the JPL Solar System Simulator image of Mars for my time of observation.
