Hello all,

You may be interested in some new Jupiter reports which have been posted on the BAA Jupiter Section web site, furthering our analysis of the South Temperate Domain and Great Red Spot in recent years. (Thanks to Damian Peach for posting them.) Here are the titles and summaries and links.

1) Jupiter’s South Temperate Domain, 2012-2015
(by John Rogers & Gianluigi Adamoli, using information from the JUPOS team).
Summary:
In our long-term report on the S. Temperate domain from 2001-2012 [Ref.1], we described major phenomena which evolve or repeat on timescales of several years, and which account for the diverse appearances of this domain. Here we continue the account from 2012 to 2015, showing how our previous findings have been confirmed by subsequent developments. In this time, STB structured segment D has collided with oval BA, producing the same effects that we predicted on the basis of the two previous such collisions. These included an outbreak of spots on the STBn jet, similar to previous such outbreaks (which we review in detail here), and documented more accurately than ever before. Zonal wind profiles revealed the form of the STBn jet within the outbreak, and confirmed that the STBs and STBn jets are stronger alongside a STB structured segment. Meanwhile a new structured segment (E), called the ‘STB Ghost’ has arisen and developed, just like the earlier ‘STB Remnant’. Recirculation occurs from the prograde SSTBn jet to the retrograde STBs jet following the STB Ghost, and in the reverse direction ~20-60° p. oval BA. These recirculations, though presently inconspicuous, may presage the development of the next generation of large white ovals.

Appendix 1 is a detailed report on the S. Temperate domain in 2014/15.

2) 2013/14 Report no.9: ‘The GRS and adjacent jets: Further analysis of amateur images, 2013/14’
(by John Rogers, Gianluigi Adamoli, & Michel Jacquesson)
Summary:
1. Shrinkage of the GRS: The GRS has shrunk in latitude as well as longitude. These recent changes in the GRS are not due to the incoming STBn spots, as the spots did not reach the GRS until after the it had shrunk.
2. Circulation of the GRS: Measurements of hi-res images in 2014 Feb. show a slightly varying rotation period of 3.6 to 3.8 days, confirming our measurement in Jan. The images in 2014 April, spanning the time of the HST imaging, have also been compiled.
3. The STBn jet outbreak: We present a full JUPOS analysis of the STBn jet outbreak in 2013/14. The outbreak behaved exactly like previous ones in 2004-2005 and 2010-2011.
Interactions with the GRS and with the STB Ghost are described in detail.
4. The SEBs jet: The retrograding jet carries sparse, small white spots which appear to be vortices as usual.

3) 2013/14 Report no.10:
‘Zonal wind profiles from ground-based and Hubble images, 2014 February and April’

(by Grischa Hahn & John Rogers)
Summary:
We have generated zonal wind profiles (ZWPs) from amateur images of Jupiter taken in 2014 Feb., and from Hubble images taken in 2014 April. The main aim was to record the ZWP for a sector of the South Temperate domain with an outbreak of STBn jet spots. The STBn jet sub-peak at 29.5°S is found to be faster alongside the STB dark sector (in agreement with previous results), but is weaker or absent in the STBn outbreak sector, where the ZWP agrees with the drift profile of the visible dark spots. In other latitudes, we find that a cyclonic cell in the NTB has very rapid circulation, whereas the adjacent N.Temperate Disturbance has a normal ZWP.

4) 2012/13 Report no.12: ‘The SEBs jet in 2012/13’.
Summary:
Analysis of the SEBs jet in 2012/13, when it showed exceptionally rapid retrograding speeds.

1) Jupiter’s South Temperate Domain, 2012-2015
(by John Rogers & Gianluigi Adamoli, using information from the JUPOS team).

2) 2013/14 Report no.9: ‘The GRS and adjacent jets: Further analysis of amateur images, 2013/14’
(by John Rogers, Gianluigi Adamoli, & Michel Jacquesson)

3) 2013/14 Report no.10:
‘Zonal wind profiles from ground-based and Hubble images, 2014 February and April’

【3) 2013/14 Report no.10:

(by Grischa Hahn & John Rogers)
