Please find attached an observation of Venus made this afternoon. Seeing was not great (around AIV) and I had to contend with frequent passing clouds. There were also frequent gusts of wind. The planet presented some interesting features this afternoon,however given that conditions were far from ideal,they may well have been artefacts of poor seeing...
Illuminated disk: A number of markings were seen on the disk,in the W11 they were somewhat more subtle,in IL it seems that a couple of slightly darker spots may have been present. The main features were two diagonal streaks which were rather prominent in the W47 filter. The Schroter effect was also rather pronounced tonight- it looks like dichotomy will not be far off. In Il I estimated a phase of 56%,but the phase was nearer 52% in IL.
Unilluminated Disk: Not seen
Bright Limb Band: Visible and complete.
Terminator: Interestingly,it did seem that the terminator was slightly irregular. In particular,the southern polar cap seemed to extend slightly into the terminator. This effect was most noticeable in the W47 filter. Of course this could all have easily been an artefact of the poor seeing conditions.
Cusp Regions: It seemed that the southern cap was brighter and perhaps a little larger than its northern counterpart. Both cusp collars were seen.
