Hi all, after spending the last 6 months of 2021 in NSW I'm back home again and involved in some interesting astronomy once more.
Phil Miles and I have started our 2022 Venus nightside imaging attempt using his scope with Venus rising close to vertical
in the morning sky before the sun from our latitude.
Phil has a clear view almost down to the horizon with the aid of his lifting pier and some selective tree pruning.
We're using a Lucid Triton TRI051S-M camera this time, still with the combination of Thorlabs FELH1000 (1000nm longpass)
and Semrock FF01-935/170 (850-1020) to give us a relatively narrow 1000-1020nm bandpass.
The new camera uses a Pregius-S sensor which will be a better match to his 500mm f/4 newtonian compared to the camera we had previously.
He and I have both bought new cameras and also removed the protective glass window so there is no glass anywhere in the optical train.
With luck this will help minimize scattered light from the super-bright dayside crescent and reduce internal reflections etc.
The smaller pixel size of the imx547 sensor helps increase the image scale, we're not using any barlow, corrector etc, just native f/4.
Attached is an image from Jan 28, a combination of two 15 minute runs taken in very good conditions as the sky was brightening just before dawn.
Comparing the image to a surface map of Venus we can see some features that match already, a good sign for the next few weeks
as long as we get some clear skies. There seem to be some features that a likely to be low clouds,
in particular the horizontal light and dark bands visible close to top and bottom of the image.
Of particular note is the small bright spot at middle right, this was also visible in the images we captured back in 2017.
The page for our 2017 data is temporarily hosted here:
http://www.acquerra.com.au/astro/venus/2017-nightside/
You can see some of the images obtained on that try, we're hoping to get some better data this time around.
