Thermal emission image of the night side at 1 micron.
Ovda Regio, the western region of Aphrodite Terra,is the large dark highland feature coming into view from the eastern limb.
There are also numerous other dark mid-altitude features.
Generally, high altitude regions are cooler than lowland areas and thus appear darker in thermal emission images.

Hi all, we wanted to show a couple of results from the current Venus night side thermal imaging that Phil Miles and I are working on.
The camera we're using (Lucid TRI051S-MC) is performing well,
we've changed from the native F/4 to F/5 to minimize a persistent optical artifact that seems to be on-sensor based somehow.
To do this we added a Brandon 1.25x MDB (Magic Dakin Barlow) and now there are very few problems apart from the obvious glare off the dayside crescent.
I've attached two animations blinking between our data and a topographic map and you can see that many features match between the two.
Higher altitudes are cooler and show as dark areas. Conversely low lying areas are hotter and show as brighter spots.
There will also be some contribution from Venusian clouds obscuring some of the landscape, it will be interesting to analyze this all in detail.
