Hi all, here's a comparison between a thermal image of Venus recorded this morning and a topographic map (showing altitudes). The surface temperatures on Venus drop as altitude increases so dark areas in the thermal map correspond to higher altitudes. Data recorded using the 1000nm-1020nm window where the atmosphere is somewhat transparent.
The camera used was the iDS U3-34E0CXP mono imx664. Phil has modified this sensor by removing the sensor cover glass to reduce reflections and increase transmission.
Attached is a short video transitioning between the thermal image captured this morning and a topo map scaled and rotated to fit. The dayside is very overexposed as we're trying to capture the faint thermal signal close to the limit of current cameras. You can see many areas that seem to match between the topo and thermal images even though the seeing was not very good this morning.
Note: The video was recorded using Virtualdub2 and X.256 (HEVC) encoding. You may need to install the free VLC media player (or some other video player) to get these as Microsoft seems to have stopped shipping HEVC codecs with Windows by default.
