解説（安達）
  ヘラス(Hellas;290W,-50)付近は相変わらず黄色く、ダストのベールによって
覆われている。今年はこういった状態が続き、東風にあおられ、西の方に広く
拡がったベールができる状態が起こっている。西の方には拡がらない事が多い。
その他には特別な変化は見られない。

September 28th, 2,003.
The neighborhood of Hellas (290W,-50) is yellow as before and light.
This is covered with dust veil.  This year, such condition is seen well.
Dust veil is shifted away in the east wind, and it forms the veil which
spread out in the west greatly.  It doesn't often spread out in the east.
A big change isn't seen in the whole surface.

良く晴れ、透明度は良いものの、風があ
りシーイング不良。なかなかピントが合
いません。

ごく稀に瞬間的にくっきりと表面模様が
見えるので、１０ショットばかり撮影し
てみましたが、数秒間も続くことはなく、
結局はボケた画像しか得られませんでし
た。

・思っている以上にシーイングの影響を受けてしまった。
・南極冠はかろうじて白く見えるが、輝きを感じないようだ。
・西端であるがヘラスの黄色のダスト雲が見える。
・エリシウムは雲もなく、むき出しの地肌が見えている。

Here is an image from September 28th 2003 at 04:06 UT. The sky transparancy
was fair 5/10 and the seeing was fair 5/10.

Attached are my observations from the 28th of September. Seeing started out mediocre, but was improving enough that I started imaging. After I imaged with the ToUcam for a while, I decided to try swapping for the 3Com camera. This was because the transparency was dropping, and at 1/25th" exposure time with the ToUcam, I had to bump up the gain to where Mars was pretty noisy through the 6". The 3Com can shoot at 1/4" second, which proved to be the solution to the noisy images.
I note that many websites about using webcams for astroimaging say that the 3com has a Sharp CCD in it. But it looks identical to the Phillips chip, and the images of Mars with the same optical system are exactly the same size, so it must be a Sony chip in the 3Com (though it might be an earlier version, because the camera is about 3 years old now).

I suspect there is a faint remnant of Novus Mons present. Also, some evening haze across Hellas.
11" (28 cm) Celestron SCT @ f/31.4.
Philips ToUcam Pro Webcam. Total exposure times:
True Tech Red Light + IR Rejection: ~350 x 0.04 secs
True Tech Blue Light + IR Rejection: ~1500 x 0.04 secs
Seeing variable (Pickering 3-6) at 20 degs. Good-excellent (p6-9) at 50 degs.
Transparency excellent (5.0mag.)  No wind. Moderate dew. Eq Diam=21.1"  Altitude= 19 - 22 degs.
