Spot approaching GRS by John H. Rogers
|
Hi everyone,
Little orange-brown spot in NTrop Z, N of oval BA, which emerged from a
small bulge on NEBn on Feb.8-9 (see attached alignment).
It seems to be identical to the Little Brown Spot that appeared in 1999
July [our report in JBAA 113, pp.26-27], in its history and colour -
and also in the fact that it is methane-dark.
This is shown by Antonio's latest methane images, dated Feb.12. Also, it may
be related to the turbulent rift in the NEB which seems to be fixed on the
Np. side of the new brown spot.
Best wishes,
02/18
Here is a more detailed description of the small brown spot that appeared
in NTropZ. Hans-Joerg Mettig has done a JUPOS chart of spots in this
region, and inspection of his chart and of the attached alignment of
images gives the following story. The new spot arose on Feb.8-9 at L2 =
151, in a sector compressed between a newly-formed, retrograding white bay
(small red arrow) and the 6-year-old, prograding white spot Z (red
arrowhead). Between Feb.11-13 (when I have no hi-res images), it split in
two, probably caught in the anticyclonic circulation of the retrograding
white bay, as the major dark fragment ended up on the p.side of the bay.
Hence, as Hans-Joerg says, "The dark NTrZ spot is situated at 143 deg.
now, 8 or 10 deg. less than about ten days ago."
