New Horizons mosaic by John H.Rogers |
You may not have seen this mosaic of images from the New Horizons probe at close encounter, showing the GRS and region f. it. (I have crudely assembled the raw images from the NH web site -- no doubt the team will release a better version in due course.) It was targeted to observe the SEB 'rift' activity there, which of course had stopped; but the surrounding cloud textures are still interesting. Note the extraordinary *lack* of cloud texture in the southern two-thirds of the SEB, and also in the shaded central part of the EZ. The southern 2/3 of the EB is also very bland in amateur colour and near-IR images, and is clearly 'fading' (becoming lighter), but this change in cloud texture preceded the fading. best wishes, John H. Rogers,Ph.D. Jupiter Section Director, [British Astronomical Association.]
