It stuck me just how difficult
it was to see the GRS,even in the steadier moments of seeing. This leads me to
think the spot is fading in both intensity and colour.

David Gray (415mm Dall-Kirkham)
Since just before Christmas I was unable to observe due to a not so slight
misalignment of the optics presumably caused by the very cold conditions. We
had a several days where daytime temperatures never exceeded -7C and as low as

-19C at night. Coarse focusing with the D-K is done by the primary mirror and I
can only guess that some differential contraction in the extreme cold has caused
the misalignment. I now have it back to near where I want it; but with
telescope collimation near-enough is not good enough,so fine adjustment on an
extra-focal star is ongoing and may take a while before I'm happy -
especially as it entails working bare-handed with allen keys etc in sub-zero
conditions!! The concreted area in front of the observatory also raised up (and
cracked) making it difficult to open the door! Never had any of this in the 32
years the observatory has stood here.

The SEBs appeared quite active at these longitudes.
The seeing and transparency were highly variable due to an approaching front.
