Jupiter:maps 2014 December 04-05 by P.Abel |
Please find attached a Jupiter map I made on the night of the 4-5th January, 2014. The map shows just under half a rotation. The conditions were quite good and for most of the time were around AII. Towards 0220UT however cloud started drifting in and cloud cover became total by 0305UT- I had hoped to get 2/3 and some Mars work done alas Spode had other plans! The main points of note were as follows: SPR: Dark greyish feature covering the south pole SSTB This could be made out for much of the longitudes observed, it appeared thin and greyish in colour. STZ: A fairly bright zone, yellowish white in colour STB: A dark greyish brown belt, quite thick in places and home to a number of white ovals. STropZ: Bright zone with a hint of STropB in a few places GRS: Rather prominent and at powers pf x250 or more, a darker orange core could be seen. RSH: Very bright- probably due to the reasonably high contrast with the GRS and SEB(s) SEB: A broad belt full of interesting details. A SEB(s), SEBz and SEB(n) could all be seen- perhaps the most interesting region was that just proceeding and just following the GRS. Just proc. the spot a dark strongly brown coloured section which curved under the GRS could be seen. Just fol the spot was a region of turbulence with a number of dark and light irregular regions well seen. EZ: Contained a number of bluish festoons. NTropZ: A bright, light yellowish region NTB: A light yellowish-gold coloured belt, but contained a number of dark greyish sections which seemed to extend into the NTropZ NTZ: A light region NNTB: Seemed to be present for quite a bit of the longitude observed. NPR: Dark greyish region covering the north pole. Intensity estimates were taken in W#25A and in W#80A. By 0300UT Io was close to the following limb, however cloud cover became total by 0305UT and the transit could not be observed. [Paul G. Abel:Leicester:United Kingdom]
