I imaged the nearly 50% illuminated Mercury a couple of evenings ago. The edge diffraction effect made it difficult to see anything near the limb, but closer to the terminator there are some features, which have a rough correlation with those from the WinJUPOS Ephemerides at the same timestamp. Perhaps the most obvious is a bright crater near the terminator, south of the equator. I wasn't able to identify this despite a search of some Mercury topographical maps.![]()
Coment by Andy Casely The crater is Kuiper. I e swapped out the WinJupos map for the low incidence angle equirectangular mosaic from Messenger as the WinJupos map has an uneven mix regions of low & high incidence angle the high angle areas dont show up the albedo (bright craters etc) very well, this one is easier to navigate.
