I spent some time this afternoon observing Mercury with the University of Leicester's 20 inch planewave Dall-Kirkham. Seeing improved but the skies were somewhat hazy. I had the impression that the surface markings I saw (if real) were easier to see when the sun was low in the sky but Mercury was still at a reasonable altitude.
I had hoped to follow Mercury as the sun set to see if the features were easier but the planet descended into the clouds at 1807UT putting an end to observations.
