Attached is an observation of Neptune I made last night. Conditions were rather unusual; the skies were very transparent (limiting visual magnitude of about +4.8) and the seeing was very good for most of the night, however the jet stream was straight above us! Normally one would expect poor seeing in these conditions but this was not the case. The main drawing shows the view I had of Neptune at x470. I had the impression of a brighter southern polar region with a greyish polar band. I have also included two low power field drawings- the bottom left shows Neptune near to the yellow main sequence star HD222878. What I believe to be Nereid can be seen in the 4 o'clock position. In the bottom right at x250 both Triton and Nereid can be seen in the 4 o'clock position. If this is Nereid (as Sky Safari would seem to indicated) then it is my first sighting of Neptune's fainter elusive satellite![Paul G. Abel:Leicester:United Kingdom]
