Paul G. Abel(203mm reflector)
After two weeks of nothing but cloud, finally a reasonable clear night arrives, but to be quite frank 'a long wait for very little' sums up the night quite adequately!
Initially, seeing was reasonable and image definition steady. Drawing 1 shows the GRS and the bright turbulent regions associated with it. IN particular there seemed to be an extremely bright plume(?) just following the GRS. The whole of the region just proc. and fol the GRS is very bright and dynamic. Also,I had the impression of dark spots and sections within the NNTB,but I was unable to record these in any convincing fashion and so I left them off the final drawings.
Later on however the seeing became vary variable, ranging from AII-IV over a period of minutes. At times,Jupiter was steady in the eyepiece,at other times the whole f.o.v undulated in the most alarming way. I battled on until 0115UT until I gave up in disgust. I managed to obtain an intensity estimate set which looks reasonable, the two transit times of the dark barges in the NEB I collected are almost certainly dubious.
Was hoping to make a drawing of Mars, but as a high power is needed due to the small disk size,it was quite out of the question under these conditions.
