Attached are two Mars drawings I made on the 2nd of March. The drawings very nearly never happened! I was out observing earlier and made some drawings of Venus. The seeing then became too poor for Jupiter. I came back out at about 0050UT and the sky was hazy with only Mars and a few bright stars visible. A cursory view in the telescope at Mars however revealed the seeing to be almost perfect! We've not had seeing this good in Leicester for a long time!! The remarkable thing was,I was able to use a power of 500x without any problems! Anyhow, the main points of the nights observing session is as follows:
Drawing A CM: 280.1
Syrtis Major now very close to the CM. At x400 there is a lot of subtle detail in Syrtis Major,Iapigia,Tyrrhenum and Hadriacum. The whole feature seemed to have a dark curved look with Iapigia Oenitria and Syrtis Maor being rather dark. Syrtis Minor also appeared fairly dark. Hellas and Ausonia bright, and the boarders of these regions (and Hadriacum) seemed to be rather dark. Interesting colour here too. For the first time ever,I observed some slight greenish colour in Iapigia and a slightly bluish colour to Syrtis Major.
In the far north Boreosyrtis was quite impressive but the thing that really took my attention was the NPC. The Lowell Band seemed to be split and the NPC seemed to have two distinct bright regions- the smaller one may have contained some orange colour. On the proc. limb Elysium bright and Aetheria present and a darkish streak. Clouds over Arabia and Moab?
Drawing B: CM: 294.8
Similar view to A,only an hour later,Colours noticed in drawing A still seem to be present and at x500 there are some very subtle details in all the features now present.
