David Gray (415-mm Dall-Kirkham, Spennymoor, Co Durham) reports two conspicuous white ovals in the Equatorial Zone (South) of Saturn on 1996 August 12. The first spot appeared elongated with the following end located at 125 deg (lambda 1). The second spot was more round in form with preceding and following ends at 144 deg and 157 deg (lambda 1) respectively.
Dr Richard McKim (216-mm Newtonian, Oundle) recorded a diffuse white spot in the EZ(S) on 1996 September 13, the centre of which was approx 88 deg (lambda 1). This feature was suspected on Sep 10 and 16.
Thomas A Dobbins and David Graham (250-mm Newtonian, Coshocton, Ohio, USA) observed a prominent feature in the EZ(S) on 1996 October 1. The feature consisted of a particularly bright region of the EZ(S) with a brilliant white spot at either end. Transit estimates in System 1 by Graham were as follows:- first spot, preceding end 248 deg, centre 258 deg, following end 268 deg. Second spot, centre 279 deg, following end 295 deg. Overall the feature was 47 deg long and took 1h 20m to transit the CM.
体系Iで、1個目は248°(p)、258°(center)、268°(f)。
The EZ(S) October 1 activity does not rival the Great White Spot of 1990 but does appear more significant than similar EZ(N) spots follwed through the second half of the 1994 apparition. All observers are urged to monitor Saturn at the present time and are requested to promptly report observations to the Director.

OBSERVING ALERT!

During late September and early October of this year, Saturn observers have been reporting activity in the SEB and EZ (mainly the EZs) of Saturn. During late September, this activity has taken the form of non-uniform differentiation of the SEB into SEBs and SEBn components whereby SEBs has shown a lack of symmetry along its linear extent across the globe of the planet. Observers in early October reported a striking brighter EZs. Let's keep Saturn under close scrutiny for the remainder of the apparition. Please send reports of any activity seen during 1996, with complete details as to time, date, CMI or CMII longitudes, instrument used, magnifications, filters, etc. Drawings, photographs, CCD images, and video images are welcome, with accompanying intensity estimates, etc. For complete information on observing Saturn, please contact Julius L. Benton, Jr., ALPO Saturn Section Coordinator, 305 Surrey Road, Savannah, GA 31410.
