Please find an observation of Saturn made on 19th July with Dr Hugh Sasse using the University of Leicester observatory.
This is my first observation of Saturn in the current apparition as the planet is now below the wall of my observatory.
Initially conditions did not look good (we have had rain for much of the day) but the clouds finally cleared and we were able to observe Saturn.
Although the planet is low down, the seeing was average (and sometimes very much better).
We were able to use powers of x230 and x356 and we had some splendid views of the planet. Main observation points were as follows:
The Globe:
EZ quite bright, yellowish colour- there appeared to be a faint EB present.
NEB seemed to contain two components- a darker southern component (NEBs) and a some light light northern component (NEBn).
There appeared to be darker sections present within the NEBs.
NTB and NNTB seen- the NTropZ and NTZ seemed to contain a greenish tint.
NPR interesting- a polar belt present with a darker polar cap.
Although this was the polar hexagon there was absolutely no sign at all of hexagonal structure. The cap seemed smooth and round.
The Rings:
A-Ring was rather dark, perhaps the darkest I've ever seen it.
Also the colour was not the customary grey- there seemed to be warmer brownish hues present.
Cassini Division seen.
B1-Ring bright and white in colour.
B3-Ring also seen,and greyish-brown in colour.
C-Ring quite dark and grey in colour.
Intensity estimates taken: 2216UT (IL),2220UT (W#23A) and 2224UT (W#80A).
By 2237UT the clouds had covered Saturn once more and we had to abandon any further observing.
