ソリス(Solis Lacus;90W,-25)方面に拡がったダストストームは、やや南に
移動したようだ。岡本氏は、ターミネーター付近で最も明るくなっている様子
を記録している。南極冠は、まだ健在だ。Sean Walkerの画像では、赤や緑の
画像で、明るくなり、東側への広がりを示している。Joel Warrenの画像は、
ダストストームの姿を鮮明に再現している。Robert Heffnerの画像ではアルシ
ア・シルバ(Arsia Silva;125W,-5)の白雲等大きな変化がないことを記録した。

Dust storm that extended to the Solis Lacus (90W,-25) district seems
to have moved to the south a little. Okamoto records the appearance
that has lightened most in the vicinity of terminater. SPC is still
alive and well. In the image of Sean Walker, dust storm lightens by
a red, green image, and shows the extension to the east side. The
image of Joel Warren clearly reproduces the appearance of dust storm.
It was recorded that there was no big change such as white clouds of
Arsia Silva in the image of Robert Heffner. (reported by 15 observers)

シーイングも透明度も非常に悪い状態でしたが
何とか２回撮影できたので報告します。
状況が悪すぎるので短波長光画像の撮影は
諦めました。2回目の撮影直後に、雲が濃くなり
火星はモニターから消えました。
ダストストームはソリス地域から南の方まで
広がっている感じです。
また、シレーン付近のにも白くなっている感じ
です。朝霧と思えますが、自転に伴って移動
している様にも見えるので気になります。

Seeing was very poor.
次第にseeingが悪くなってきたようなので
撮影を打切り、画像処理、HP掲載作業にかかる。
00:15に空を見上げると火星のすぐ西側に雲が迫り、
３分後に雲に隠される。撮影できず。
大きな雲のようなので、今夜はあきらめ、
望遠鏡は蓋だけして、カバーはかけず。
パソコン、アイピースを片付ける。
メールとHPの追加作業を．．
01:15 ボタボタの音で気がつき、外を見ると
強い雨、すでに望遠鏡が雨でべたべた。
急いでカバーをかけたが．．
寒冷前線の通過 ですね。
低気圧が迫っていたのに気づかなかった。
油断でした。

海外の観測を見ると、ソリス近辺のダストストームはめまぐるしく変化していますね。
こんなに短時間でめままぐるしく変化するものなのですね。
ソリスのど真ん中にダストストームが侵入してきたようで、なんとか捉えられないかと
１９時過ぎから観測を始めました。
1/10の極悪シーイングながら、ソリス南部をぐるりと回りこむようなダストストームが見られました。
とても明るく、いかにも「生きたストームが侵攻してくる」といった。強烈な印象でした。
池村さんのシュミレーション画像と比較すると、ソリス全体にダストストームがかかっているようですね。

永長氏のメーリングで、ソリス付近にダストストムが拡がりつつあるとの注意を喚起されている。慌てて望遠鏡をセットし撮像を始めるが、雨上がりと上空の寒気のせいでシーイングが極めて悪い。当初ATKで撮像を始めるが、雲の出没も酷いため、Toucamに切り替え拡大率を落としシャッタースピードを速くして撮像。明らかにソリス付近にダストがあることがわかる。

シーイングは最悪に近いですが黄雲は明るく見えていました。
２００３年の１２月の黄雲に良く似ていると思います。

コメント：ダストストームがソリス付近を覆っているようですが、
詳細が判りません。真冬なみの寒気が南下してきて
大荒れに状態でした。雲が行過ぎて、さあ、撮像するぞ
と思うと、また雲の状態でした。いつものシャッタースピード
から１段上げて、１／３３秒で撮影をしました。
その後、全面に雲に覆われ中止した。２３日午前３時前、近所で
火災が発生し、住宅が強風のため、全焼しました。

What can I say about this image? Well, I wish I would of used 5fps when seeing was excellent over the past week since the storm started. Check out the structure of the cloud, how delicate it is. I didn't adjust a single bit of the color, and I lightly processed it. This is just a first run, so I should get improvement tomorrow after some sleep. Mars and the scope get all the credit, I'm just a sleep deprived guy along for the ride. My new processing style helped a bit too I guess. Only Dr. Tony Phillips, the ALPO, CMO and Don Parker have permission to use this image as they see fit. Anyone else please e-mail me.
Here is my final version from 10-22-05 08:25 UT. It is also attached for those who can receive it. I did my best to try and capture how intricate the dust cloud is w/o overprocessing it. Didn't touch touch the color at all. Since I mostly got rid of that arc that has been plaguing many images lately, the disc looks a bit smaller compared to other images. Its because the arc is almost gone and I got the edges very sharp. All opinions and comments, good or bad, appreciated. I'm always looking to learn. :)

I send you a Mars image and dust storm comparison over Solis Lacus from
2005/10/22 13:32 UT
Comments: The development of the dust storm over Solis Lacus can be seen
between 10/20 and 10/22.
Seeing was atrocious - the worst I've seen this season with a strong jet
stream and rapidly dropping temps. Right image from the 20th UT is @ around
f/50 and left is @ around f/30; C11 with the LU075 and IR block filter.
Better images of the dust storm from this angle to come in the next days.

Final starting to getting some stable air over Perth. Seeing stayed
steady at about 7/10 for nearly 2 hours. Can only see the edge of the
dust storm in these images.

Here are some Mars images from October 21-22nd. The first of two nights at Sir Patrick's Moore's home on the south coast of the UK.
The first set with Syrtis Major central is from the C9.25 hand focused. Seeing was fair.
The second set is quite a special one, being taken with Patrick's historic 15" F/5.9 Fullerscopes newtonian. This telescope is famous among anyone who has ever read his books, with him often being picture alongside it (photo attached.) He made many observations of Mars, and the other Planets with this telescope and it though having observed before through this telescope, it was a special moment to obtain some images of Mars with this historic telescope. Selsey astronomer Ian Sharp and Myself combined efforts for the second set of images from the newtonian under poorer seeing.

I am sending 2 images taken one the 22 and the other the 23rd. The first
is a image taken with a LU-075M using an 10" f/20 TEC Maksutov working
at f/50, it was taken through a Baader IR/pass, and RGB Schuler filters.
The B&W was taken in terrible seeing with the IR/pass.
